Kampung Inggris – Knowing what articles are and when to use them in English might be difficult for language learners. Especially considering that in some situations there is no article at all. But don’t worry, we’re here to help you.
In English there are three articles: a, an, and the. Now, we’re going to look at what these are, the differences between them and when to use them – or not, in some cases.
What is an article?
Pada dasarnya, article adalah kata sifat (adjective) dan sebagai adjective, articles modify nouns. (artikel atau kata sifat menjelaskan noun/ kata benda).
English articles:
Bahasa inggris mempunyai dua macam articles yaitu the and a/an.
Definite articles berupa kata sandang ‘the’ dan digunakan pada bentuk-bentuk kata tertentu saja.
Indefinite articles memakai kata sandang ‘a’ dan ‘an’ yang memiliki arti sebuah. Berikut ini penjelasannya :
- The di gunakan untuk merujuk pada specific atau particular nouns.
- a/an di gunakan untuk menjelaskan non-specific atau non-particular nouns.
- The adalah definite article dan a/an adalah indefinite article.
Contoh :
“Let’s read the book,”
book tersebut adalah buku yang spesifik.
Kalimat tersebut bukanlah ajakan untuk membaca buku secara umum, melainkan ajakan untuk membaca suatu buku yang sudah spesifik (sudah di pahami buku yang mana).
“Let’s read a book,”
Kalimat tersebut adalah kalimat ajakan untuk membaca buku (buku apapun).
Note; penggunaan a/an bergantung pada bunyi dari kata setelahnya. Contohnya :
- A book
- A famous school
- A university
- An apple
- An amazing woman
- An hour

Contoh- contoh lain :
“I just watch the most popular movie of the year.”
Ada banyak movie tapi hanya 1 yang paling populer.oleh karena itu, kita menggunkan “The”.
“I would like to watch a movie.”
Dalam kalimat ini, kita tidak membahas tentang movie yang spesifik. Ada banyak movie, dan aku mau melihat movie apapun itu (tidak ada spesifik movie yang ingin di tonton)
“My boy really wants a Bike for his birthday gift.”
Bike apapun itu.
“When I was at the zoo, I saw an Eagle
Bukan Eagle yang spesifik.
“Some one gave The Eagle its food.”
Eagle yang spesifik (yang sudah kita ketahui sebelumnya).
“I am a teacher”.
teacher adalah sebuh profesi bukan kata benda yang specifik.
“the guy with a gun yesterday was an American”.
Gun bukan kata yang spesifik.
American juga bukan kata benda yang spesifik.
“A polliceman arrested The American”
Police bukan kata benda yang spesifik.
American (dalam kalimat ini) adalah spesifik dimana kita sudah mengetahui American yang mana.
“I was happy to see the policeman arrested the criminal!”
Policeman disini adalah spesifik karena kita sudah tau policeman yang mana.
Criminal disini juga spesifik karena kita paham bahwa criminal tersebut adalah the American pada contoh sebelumnya.
Use ‘no article’ before:
- Names of languages and nationalities: Chinese, Russian (unless referring to the population of the place e.g. ‘The Italians are known for their delicious food.’).
- Names of sports: cricket, baseball.
- Names of subjects: Art, Mathematics.
Do NOT use ‘the’ before:
- Lakes: Lake Geneva, Lake Placids
- Mountains: Mount Fuji, Mount Everest.
- Continents: Europe, Asia.
- Most countries: England, Sweden.
- Counties/states/provinces/regions: Oxfordshire, Catalunya, California.
- Cities, towns, villages: London, Paris.
- Islands: Bali, Hawaii.
- Street names: Main Street, 5th Avenue.
Use ‘the’ before:
- Rivers: The Nile, The Mississippi.
- Mountain ranges: The Andes, The Pyrenees.
- Deserts: The Sahara, The Atacama.
- Oceans and seas: The Pacific, The Mediterranean.
- Groups of islands: The Maldives, The Seychelles.
- Some countries: The USA, The Netherlands.
- Points on the globe: The Equator, The North Pole.
- Geographical areas: The Middle East, The West.
